The former Red Bull adviser backed Ralf Schumacher's defence and claimed Horner had opposed Verstappen's promotion to the senior team ahead of his 2016 debut.

Helmut Marko has rejected Christian Horner's account of Max Verstappen's recruitment to Red Bull, backing Ralf Schumacher's description of the claim as “an absolute lie” and alleging that Horner himself resisted the Dutchman's promotion in 2016.

The dispute concerns Horner's forthcoming autobiography, *Drive*, which is due to be released on 22 October. The former Red Bull team principal, who left the team in 2025, claims Marko initially did not want Verstappen and that the driver's father, Jos, played a decisive role in securing the agreement.

## Marko backs Schumacher's response

Speaking to Austrian outlet oe24, Marko indicated he did not intend to engage extensively with Horner's version of events.

“I'm ignoring it as much as possible,” he said, before endorsing Schumacher's response: “Ralf Schumacher handled it very well.”

Schumacher, the former Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports pundit, had challenged the book's account by describing an approach from Marko while Verstappen was still a child.

“Marko approached Max when he was just 11 and a half years old. At the time, Jos said it was still too early for him,” Schumacher said.

According to Schumacher, Marko was disappointed by that response. His account places Marko's interest well before Verstappen's eventual arrival in Formula 1, rather than portraying him as an obstacle to the signing.

## Early contact and Formula 3

Marko supported Schumacher's defence, saying the timing of that early contact had not been right during Verstappen's karting career.

“It worked out well the way it did,” Marko told oe24.

He pointed to Verstappen's subsequent time in Formula 3 as the period when their paths converged again, leading to a partnership that ultimately brought the Dutchman four world championships.

## A separate dispute over promotion

Marko also challenged Horner over the decision to move Verstappen into the senior Red Bull team in 2016, claiming the then-team principal had reservations about the young driver's readiness.

“He thought Max was too young, too inexperienced...” Marko said of Horner.

Verstappen won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona on his first appearance for Red Bull. Marko cited that race while asserting his own role in bringing Verstappen into F1 and overcoming Horner's objections.

The exchange leaves two sharply conflicting accounts of Verstappen's recruitment and promotion ahead of the book's publication.

The 2025 filing covers only Red Bull Racing’s settlement with its former boss, while the team’s annual net profit increased to £9.384 million.

Red Bull Racing paid Christian Horner £33.494 million in compensation following his dismissal in 2025, according to Companies House accounts examined by RacingNews365. The disclosure covers the racing team alone, rather than every Red Bull business in which he held a directorship.

Horner lost his roles as team principal and chief executive on 9 July 2025, despite having a contract running until 2030. His formal resignation as a director of Red Bull Racing Limited followed on 13 August.

## What the accounts disclose

The filing records the payment against the “highest paid director” as “compensation for loss of office”. Although Horner is not identified by name in that entry, RacingNews365 reports that he was the company’s highest-paid director and had earned £4.441 million in salary before his removal.

The £33.494 million relates to compensation paid during the remainder of the financial year, which ended on 31 December 2025. It does not include any settlement from Red Bull Powertrains or Red Bull Advanced Technologies, where Horner also served as a director.

That distinction leaves the full value of his departure package unresolved. RacingNews365 reports that the overall settlement was understood to be potentially worth more than £50 million.

Any further payments made from 1 January 2026 could appear in the following year’s accounts, due to be filed with Companies House on 30 September 2027.

## Departure ended two decades in charge

The decision to remove Horner came from Austrian parent company Red Bull GmbH. Laurent Mekies moved across from sister outfit Racing Bulls to take over leadership of the team.

Horner’s 20-year tenure had delivered eight drivers’ championships, six constructors’ titles and 124 grand prix victories.

According to RacingNews365, he was understood to have relinquished some money owed to him in exchange for a shorter gardening-leave period, allowing a potential return to Formula 1 in 2026 if he secured a role.

Horner has said he would prefer his next involvement to include a place in a team’s ownership structure rather than solely an employed position. He has also indicated that he would be willing to put that ambition aside for the Ferrari team principal role.

## Red Bull’s annual profit rises

The same accounts show Red Bull Racing recorded a net profit of £9.384 million for 2025, compared with £1.681 million in 2024.

Turnover increased to £379.583 million from £314.409 million. After cost of sales, gross profit stood at £104.205 million, against £23.676 million a year earlier.

Expenses and interest brought the 2025 pre-tax profit to £11.075 million, up from £2.895 million in 2024. The final post-tax result represented a year-on-year improvement of £7.703 million.

Lando Norris took pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix by 0.043 seconds, holding off his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in a session that both drivers admitted came down to a single corner.

Norris set his time on his first run in the final part of qualifying, then aborted his second attempt after locking the front-left into the castle section. Piastri went quicker in the first two sectors on his last lap but lost almost two tenths of a second between turn 16 and the flag.

"I knew it was close because I could see the delta going green," Norris said afterwards. "You cannot afford to be greedy here. One touch of the wall and your session is over, and so is your car."

## A front row with the championship at stake

The two McLaren drivers arrive in Baku separated by eleven points with eight rounds to go, and the team has so far refused to name a number one. Team principal Andrea Stella repeated on Saturday evening that both cars would be free to race.

> We have no intention of deciding this in a meeting room. They will decide it on the track.

Charles Leclerc qualified third for Ferrari, half a second back, and remains the only driver other than the two McLarens to have taken pole at this circuit in the last five seasons. Max Verstappen completed the second row after a scrappy final run.

## What it means for Sunday

Baku has produced a safety car in every one of its last six races, and the long run to turn one means pole is worth less here than at any other circuit on the calendar. Norris has led the opening lap from pole only twice this season.

Tyre choice adds a second variable. Both McLarens will start on the medium compound, while Ferrari has kept an extra set of softs for the race, a decision that suggests Leclerc plans an early stop and a long second stint.

The 2026 regulations were sold to the public as an aerodynamic reset. Inside the teams, almost nobody talks about the bodywork. The performance spread this season has been written by the power unit, and specifically by how quickly each manufacturer learned to deploy 350kW of electrical energy without running out of it.

The headline numbers are simple enough. The internal combustion engine is smaller in output, the MGU-H is gone, and the electrical component now provides close to half of total power. Fuel is fully sustainable. What none of that conveys is the practical problem: on a circuit like Monza or Las Vegas, the battery cannot supply full deployment for the whole lap.

## Energy management became a driving skill

Drivers now lift and coast earlier, harvest under braking more aggressively, and in some cases deliberately sacrifice speed on one straight to have deployment available on the next. Teams that built simulation tools for this during 2024 have a clear advantage.

> The lap time is no longer the fastest way round. It is the fastest way round with the energy you have.

Mercedes and Audi appear to have the strongest deployment maps. Both arrived at pre-season testing able to run full power laps without the drop-off in the final sector that affected their rivals.

## Where the losses are

Alpine's switch to a customer Mercedes supply has cost it in packaging rather than power. The Enstone chassis was designed around a different installation and the compromise shows in cooling.

Red Bull's first season as an engine builder has produced exactly the mixed picture the paddock expected: competitive peak power, less mature energy recovery software. The gap is narrowing race by race, which is why the team's second half of the season looks stronger than its first.

Max Verstappen says the floor Red Bull introduced at Monza has finally addressed the instability on corner entry that shaped the first half of his season.

"It is not a magic part, but I can turn in and know what the car is going to do," Verstappen said in Baku. "Before, I had to wait for the front to arrive, and by then the lap was gone."

The team brought a revised floor edge and a new diffuser fence package to Italy, the third significant aerodynamic update of the year. Verstappen finished second there and led the first half of the Madrid Grand Prix before a slow pit stop dropped him behind Leclerc.

## Still too late for the title

The improvement arrives with eight rounds left and Verstappen 68 points behind Norris, a deficit he described as "realistically finished" in Madrid. He has since softened that view without changing the arithmetic.

Team principal Laurent Mekies is more interested in what the part means for next year. "Everything we learn about this floor goes into the 2027 car," he said. "That is the value of it."

## The sporting context

Hamilton's second season at Maranello has been better than his first: two wins, seven podiums and a qualifying record against Leclerc that is close to level. He turns 42 in January.

A Formula 1 tyre is designed to work in a narrow temperature window. Below it the compound does not generate grip; above it the surface degrades. In Las Vegas, the problem is always the bottom of that window.

The race starts at 10pm local time in November, and track temperature typically sits between 12°C and 16°C. That is colder than any other race on the calendar and colder than the tyre was designed for.

## The consequences

First, the out-lap becomes critical. Drivers weave, brake hard and sometimes deliberately slide the car to put energy into the tyre carcass. Second, the first lap after a pit stop is extremely slow, which changes the maths of every strategy call.

> You are not managing degradation here. You are managing getting the tyre to work at all.

Third, graining becomes the dominant failure mode. A cold tyre sliding on a smooth, low-grip surface tears small pieces of rubber from itself, and those pieces then reduce grip further.

## What teams do about it

Teams run more aggressive brake ducting to push heat into the wheel rim, increase camber to load the shoulder of the tyre, and start on the softest compound available. None of it solves the problem. It only makes the first three laps of a stint survivable.

The circuit that hosted the first world championship race has secured its place on the calendar for another fourteen years.

Silverstone has agreed a new contract to host the British Grand Prix until 2040, extending a relationship that began with the first world championship race in May 1950.

The deal was announced jointly by Formula 1 and the British Racing Drivers' Club and includes commitments to further spectator infrastructure at the Stowe and Club ends of the circuit.

"This is the home of the sport and it needs to feel like it," said BRDC chair Stuart Pringle. "Fourteen years of certainty means we can plan properly rather than year to year."

## A calendar under pressure

With 24 races and a queue of new venues, long-term contracts have become the currency of calendar security. Silverstone drew 480,000 spectators across the 2026 weekend, the highest attendance of any round.

Williams has signed Alexander Albon to a new multi-year contract that keeps him at Grove beyond the 2028 season.

Albon joined Williams in 2022 after a season as Red Bull's reserve, and has out-scored every team-mate since. He has been central to the team's technical direction under James Vowles, spending significant time in the simulator and in design reviews.

"Alex is not just quick, he is useful," Vowles said. "He can tell you what he needs from a car eighteen months before that car exists."

## Sainz stays for now

Carlos Sainz's contract runs to the end of 2027 and Vowles said there was no reason to revisit it early. The pairing has scored 128 points this season, the team's best return since 2017.

Teams and the FIA will discuss whether to increase sprint distance, change the points scale, or reduce the number of sprint weekends.

The sprint format will be reviewed again before the 2027 season, with three separate proposals on the table at the next meeting of the Formula 1 Commission.

The first would lengthen the sprint from roughly 100km to 150km, forcing at least one pit stop. The second would widen the points scale from the current top eight to the top ten. The third, supported by two teams, would cut the number of sprint weekends from six to four.

## Where the teams stand

Larger teams are broadly in favour of longer sprints, arguing that a mandatory stop introduces strategy and reduces the processional character of the current format. Smaller teams are more concerned with the cost of damage, which falls outside the cap only in limited circumstances.

Drivers have been consistent in one respect: they want the weekend format to be the same at every event. "Six different Fridays and eighteen normal ones is the bit that makes no sense," said George Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association.

Kimi Antonelli took his first Formula 1 pole position at the inaugural Madrid Grand Prix, beating Charles Leclerc by 0.114 seconds on a circuit where no driver had prior race experience.

Antonelli was quickest in every part of qualifying, a session interrupted twice by drivers finding the limits of the new banked turn 10. "I have been waiting for a weekend where nobody has any data," he said. "It felt like a Sunday morning in karting."

## Mercedes' strongest Saturday of the year

The pole continues a clear upward trend for Mercedes since the Belgian Grand Prix, where the team introduced a revised rear suspension. George Russell qualified fifth, complaining of traffic on his final run.

For Antonelli it is the most convincing weekend of a second season that started badly. He scored four points in the first six rounds; he has scored 78 since.

Gabriel Bortoleto scored the first podium of Audi's works Formula 1 era with third place in São Paulo, in front of the crowd that has followed him since his karting years.

The result was built on a single decision. When the rain arrived on lap 17, Audi brought Bortoleto in immediately while the cars ahead stayed out for another two laps. He emerged sixth on intermediates and was fourth by the time the leaders had stopped.

"I heard the crowd before I saw the flag," he said. "I have watched Brazilians on that podium on television my whole life."

## A first for Hinwil under its new name

The Hinwil factory has been on the podium many times as Sauber. This was its first as Audi, and the first for a German manufacturer as a full constructor since 2009.

Team principal Jonathan Wheatley was careful to frame it as an outlier. "We took a chance and it worked. The car is not a podium car yet. That is next year's job."
