Although the Dutchman managed to secure an impressive pole position at the demanding Marina Bay Circuit, a looming shadow hung over his achievement for a long time. An alleged yellow flag infringement during SQ1, involving Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, caused tension and led to a summons to the stewards, the outcome of which could have determined his starting position for the sprint race.

The incident, which quickly led to an official investigation after the session, concerned an overtake on Hamilton while yellow flags were being waved. This event, immediately reported by Hamilton over team radio, threatened Verstappen with a grid penalty, thereby nullifying his hard-fought first starting spot for the sprint race.

A contentious moment on track

The controversy arose in the early stages of SQ1 when Sergio Pérez drove his Cadillac into the tyre barriers at Turn 5, resulting in flying debris and the waving of yellow flags. Verstappen, who was on a flying lap at the time, approached Hamilton shortly after Turn 7.

According to Hamilton, who had already been warned about the approaching Red Bull and slowed down to make space, Verstappen overtook him while the yellow flags were active. "Max overtook me under yellow," Hamilton reported directly to his team. Verstappen himself offered over the radio to give the position back, stating: "I think I was past him before it went yellow, but I want to be safe rather than sorry." He then aborted his flying lap and did not complete it, a detail that would later prove crucial in the stewards' assessment.

Telemetry provides clarity

After the session, both Verstappen and Hamilton, along with representatives from Red Bull and Ferrari, were summoned to the stewards. The crucial evidence came from the telemetry data of both cars. This data revealed a more nuanced picture than the initial images suggested. Analysis showed that Verstappen had completely lifted off the throttle within forty metres of entering the yellow flag sector. However, the speed difference between the two drivers was significant; Hamilton was travelling at less than 60 kilometres per hour at the time of the overtake, while Verstappen, although already slowing down, still had a considerably higher speed. This caused Verstappen to inadvertently pass the Ferrari, even while he himself was braking. His speed at the point of overtaking was about seventy kilometres per hour lower than in a comparable flying lap.

No penalty after careful consideration

The stewards ultimately concluded that while Verstappen had indeed overtaken under yellow flags, the circumstances did not warrant a penalty. The official document stated that Verstappen reacted appropriately to the yellow flag and that the speed difference, combined with his action to lift off the throttle and abort the lap, served as mitigating circumstances.

Verstappen also explained that an abrupt, hard braking manoeuvre to avoid the overtake could have created a dangerous situation. The stewards considered the incident an "unfortunate consequence of the large difference in approach speed."

As a result, Verstappen retains his pole position for the sprint race, where he hopes to build on Red Bull's recent positive trend after their first win of the season in Sepang.

Meanwhile, championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who qualified seventh, will have to fight for points from the midfield.
