Alexander Albon against Carlos Sainz in 2020.
Alexander Albon is Thailand’s modern standard-bearer in Formula 1, a London-born racer whose measured speed and racecraft have kept him relevant through a turbulent top-tier career. He remains the reference point at Williams with race number 23 and, even in a leaner campaign so far, sits P19 on 5 points as the team works through its latest rebuild.
Born on 23 March 1996 in London and racing under the Thai flag, Albon’s breakout year came in the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship, where he finished third overall behind George Russell and Lando Norris with DAMS.
Albon’s F1 bow arrived with Toro Rosso in 2019, and a mid-year promotion to Red Bull followed that summer. He ended his rookie season eighth in the standings with 92 points, a remarkable haul for a driver who split his time between a midfield car and a frontrunner. The following year brought two podiums, 105 points and seventh in the 2020 championship. He also became the first Thai driver to stand on a Formula 1 podium, a notable landmark given Thailand’s sparse F1 history since Prince Bira in the 1950s.
The loss of his Red Bull race seat for 2021 reset his trajectory. A year out of a full-time drive kept him active in testing and development roles.
Albon’s return to the grid with Williams in 2022 yielded P19 with 4 points. In 2023 he became the focal point of Williams’ efforts, translating limited chances into P13 with 27 points. The 2024 campaign brought P16 and 12 points.
This phase cemented his role at Grove as the driver who sets the team’s competitive baseline. Weekend after weekend he delivered the sort of controlled races that turn low-teens grid slots into points.
Williams’ step in 2025 was tangible. Albon finished the season eighth in the championship on 73 points, his best finish since 2020 and a clear marker of progress for both driver and team.
The 2026 season to date has been more attritional. Albon is P19 with 5 points and no wins. He remains the yardstick for where the car can be taken on a clean weekend. With race number 23 still on the Williams, he continues to carry Thailand’s colours at the sport’s top level.
In sum, Albon’s career arc is distinctive for its durability. From mid-season promotion to frontline duty, to a reset outside a race seat, and back into a leadership role at Williams, he has held onto his core strengths. His two podiums with Red Bull, his best finishes of P7 in 2020 and P8 in 2019 and 2025, and his run of points-scoring seasons since returning with Williams underpin a profile built on consistency and clean execution.
Alexander Albon is 30 years old, was born in London, United Kingdom and first entered Formula 1 in 2019. The Thai driver races for Williams under number 23.
