About Charles Leclerc

Charles Leclerc

Charles Leclerc is Ferrari’s modern standard-bearer, a prodigiously fast qualifier. A two-time Grand Prix winner in his first season at Maranello and a three-time race winner as recently as 2024, he remains central to Ferrari’s title ambitions in 2026 and sits fourth in the standings with one win so far.

From Monaco to the Ferrari academy

Born in Monte Carlo in 1997, Leclerc progressed through junior single-seaters backed by the Ferrari Driver Academy. He won the GP3 Series in 2016 and the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2017, the latter with a level of authority rare in that category. Those titles earned him a Formula 1 debut with Alfa Romeo Sauber in 2018.

He scored 39 points and finished 13th in the championship in that rookie year, developing quickly as Sauber improved. The highlights included regular Q3 appearances and a growing reputation for clean, aggressive racecraft. Ferrari had already marked him out as its future, and the step up came swiftly.

Breakthrough at Ferrari

Promoted to Ferrari in 2019, Leclerc adapted immediately to the demands of life at the front. Early poles signalled his intent, and he converted that speed into breakthrough victories at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza, becoming the first Monegasque driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix and an instant hero to the Tifosi. He finished the season fourth overall with 264 points and two wins.

Ferrari slipped down the order in 2020 and Leclerc, while still extracting strong qualifying laps and opportunistic results, ended the campaign eighth with 98 points and no wins. In 2021 the car improved, and so did Ferrari’s consistency, but he again finished without a victory, seventh overall with 159 points. His raw speed remained plain, not least with high-profile poles, yet podiums rather than wins defined that phase.

A title fight and its lessons

In 2022, Ferrari returned to race-winning form and Leclerc led from the front. He won three Grands Prix and carried the fight for much of the season, eventually finishing second in the championship on 308 points. The year underlined both his strengths and the margins that decide titles at this level, as reliability problems and strategic missteps blunted a campaign that had begun with authority.

The 2023 season brought fewer rewards on Sundays despite regular flashes of Saturday brilliance. Leclerc ended fifth overall with 206 points and no wins, a ranking that reflected Ferrari’s uneven race pace more than any lack of qualifying edge.

The present phase

Leclerc entered 2024 and delivered three victories, finishing third in the championship with 356 points. The 2025 season proved more austere, yielding fifth in the standings with 242 points and no wins. He continued with his familiar race number 16.

In 2026, with the season still in progress, Leclerc is fourth in the standings on 191 points with one win. The balance of his career to date is clear in the numbers: two early Ferrari victories in 2019, a run to second overall with three wins in 2022, another three-win campaign in 2024, and continued podium-level scoring through to 2026. For Ferrari, a team whose last drivers’ title dates back to 2007, his consistency and qualifying prowess remain key assets in the hunt for championships.

Leclerc’s reputation rests on more than statistics. He is widely regarded as a benchmark over a single lap, capable of unlocking a car’s ultimate pace on demand, and his race management has matured alongside that speed. The Monégasque’s calm exterior masks a fierce competitor who has learned to balance risk with reward while operating within the intense scrutiny that comes with Ferrari. Still only in his late twenties and already a multiple Grand Prix winner, he occupies a rarefied place in the modern grid: the driver around whom Ferrari has built, and continues to build, its hopes of returning to the top.

Charles Leclerc is 28 years old, was born in Monte Carlo, Monaco and first entered Formula 1 in 2018. The Monegasque driver races for Ferrari under number 16.
