How the 2026 power units quietly reordered the grid

Half the electrical power, none of the MGU-H and a new fuel: Marcus Reid explains why some teams found the new formula easier than others.

The 2026 regulations were sold to the public as an aerodynamic reset. Inside the teams, almost nobody talks about the bodywork. The performance spread this season has been written by the power unit, and specifically by how quickly each manufacturer learned to deploy 350kW of electrical energy without running out of it.

The headline numbers are simple enough. The internal combustion engine is smaller in output, the MGU-H is gone, and the electrical component now provides close to half of total power. Fuel is fully sustainable. What none of that conveys is the practical problem: on a circuit like Monza or Las Vegas, the battery cannot supply full deployment for the whole lap.

Energy management became a driving skill

Drivers now lift and coast earlier, harvest under braking more aggressively, and in some cases deliberately sacrifice speed on one straight to have deployment available on the next. Teams that built simulation tools for this during 2024 have a clear advantage.

The lap time is no longer the fastest way round. It is the fastest way round with the energy you have.

Mercedes and Audi appear to have the strongest deployment maps. Both arrived at pre-season testing able to run full power laps without the drop-off in the final sector that affected their rivals.

Where the losses are

Alpine's switch to a customer Mercedes supply has cost it in packaging rather than power. The Enstone chassis was designed around a different installation and the compromise shows in cooling.

Red Bull's first season as an engine builder has produced exactly the mixed picture the paddock expected: competitive peak power, less mature energy recovery software. The gap is narrowing race by race, which is why the team's second half of the season looks stronger than its first.
